Pain in the right rib cage, making it difficult to breathe deeply
Pain in the right rib area that worsens with deep breathing may be related to physiological causes, such as sudden intense physical activity, or could result from pathological conditions like intercostal neuralgia or rib fractures. Once the cause is identified, follow medical advice for medication or, if necessary, surgical intervention.
I. Physiological Causes
When a person who has been physically inactive for a prolonged period suddenly engages in strenuous activities such as playing football or jumping rope, it may lead to poor coordination of respiratory muscles, causing a sensation of tightness or pain in the chest. If no other abnormalities are present, special treatment is usually unnecessary; symptoms typically resolve on their own with adequate rest.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Intercostal Neuralgia
If organs or tissues adjacent to the ribs become diseased, they may compress nerve roots to varying degrees, resulting in sharp, knife-like or burning pain. Patients may consult a doctor about taking medications such as mecobalamin tablets, gabapentin capsules, or ibuprofen sustained-release capsules to help alleviate symptoms.
2. Rib Fracture
Rib fractures can occur due to external trauma such as traffic accidents, leading to compression of the thoracic cage and lateral bending of the rib shaft, which causes pain during breathing and shortness of breath. Initial treatment may involve manual reduction and external fixation. If the condition worsens, consultation with a physician regarding procedures such as closed thoracic drainage is recommended.
Besides the above-mentioned causes, conditions such as pleurisy may also be responsible. After onset, patients should prioritize rest and schedule regular follow-up visits at the hospital.
