What causes severe coughing at night?
Severe coughing at night may be caused by physiological factors or pathological conditions such as bronchitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is recommended to seek targeted treatment under medical guidance based on the underlying cause.
I. Physiological Causes
If proper warmth is not maintained at night, the nasal passages may be irritated by cold air, potentially triggering paroxysmal dry cough. However, this usually does not require special treatment and can improve with adequate保暖 (warmth protection).
II. Pathological Causes
1. Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchi due to infection by mycoplasma or chlamydia may chronically irritate the respiratory system, leading to frequent nighttime coughing. Follow your doctor's instructions to use medications such as amoxicillin capsules, penicillin V potassium tablets, or pentoxyverine tablets for anti-inflammatory and cough-suppressant treatment.
2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
When lying down at night, stomach acid is more likely to flow back into the esophagus, irritating the throat and causing coughing. Under medical guidance, consider using medications such as ranitidine hydrochloride capsules, rabeprazole sodium enteric-coated tablets, or omeprazole enteric-coated tablets to relieve symptoms.
In addition, severe nighttime coughing may also occur in cases of cough-variant asthma. It is recommended to follow medical advice for treatment to prevent worsening symptoms.
