Shortness of breath, chest tightness, and dyspnea in the third trimester of pregnancy
Shortness of breath, chest tightness, and dyspnea in the third trimester can be caused by both physiological and pathological factors, with pathological causes often related to conditions such as anemia and heart disease. It is recommended to get adequate rest, avoid strenuous exercise, and seek evaluation and management at a hospital obstetrics and gynecology department.
1. Physiological Causes
In late pregnancy, rapid fetal development leads to an enlarged uterus, which elevates the diaphragm and reduces thoracic cavity volume, resulting in breathing discomfort. Symptoms usually improve with rest, especially when lying semi-reclined or using a high pillow; specific treatment is generally not required.
2. Pathological Causes
2.1 Anemia
Anemia in late pregnancy reduces the body's oxygen-carrying capacity and blood flow, leading to insufficient cardiac perfusion and the aforementioned symptoms. It is recommended to take medications such as ferrous sulfate tablets, vitamin C tablets, and folic acid under medical supervision to improve anemia and relieve symptoms.
2.2 Heart Disease
Pregnancy-related heart disease may cause myocardial ischemia and tachycardia, increasing oxygen consumption and placing the body in a state of hypoxia, thereby causing discomfort. Symptom relief can be achieved through supplemental oxygen therapy as directed by a physician.
In addition, pulmonary conditions such as pleural effusion may also be responsible. It is advisable to avoid intense physical activity and visit the obstetrics and gynecology department at a hospital for proper diagnosis and targeted treatment.
