Does sit-ups hurt your lower back?
Whether sit-ups can harm the lower back depends on the intensity of the exercise.
1. No harm
If sit-ups are performed appropriately with low intensity, they can help strengthen abdominal muscles, promote abdominal muscle development, and protect the lumbar intervertebral discs. In such cases, they generally do not cause back injury.
2. Possible harm
If sit-ups are performed at high intensity or with abrupt, forceful movements, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the lower back may be excessively stretched beyond their normal capacity, leading to strain. Additionally, if the angle during sit-ups is too large, it may increase pressure within the lumbar intervertebral discs, potentially causing tears in the annulus fibrosus and resulting in disc damage, such as disc degeneration or lumbar disc herniation.
During regular exercise, attention should be paid to intensity. Avoid vigorous activities or prolonged exercise sessions that could lead to physical discomfort.
