Introduction
In general, failure to obtain a blood glucose reading may be due to operational errors, malfunction of the glucometer, or expired test strips. In addition, if the blood glucose level measured from a fingertip blood sample is excessively high—beyond the maximum value that the glucometer can display—the device will not show a proper reading, resulting in an inability to measure blood glucose. In such cases, prompt medical attention is required, and blood glucose should be tested using a venous blood sample.

Generally, failure to obtain a blood glucose reading may be due to operational errors, malfunctioning of the glucometer, or expired test strips. Specific details are as follows:

1. Operational errors

When using a glucometer to measure blood glucose, hands should first be cleaned thoroughly. Then, use a lancet to collect a drop of blood from the fingertip and apply it onto the test strip. Afterward, insert the test strip into the glucometer to obtain a reading. If insufficient blood is collected or the test strip is improperly inserted, the device may fail to display a result. It is recommended that patients repeat the test following the correct procedure.

2. Glucometer malfunction

Glucometers require regular calibration. If the device is faulty or out of calibration, it may fail to provide a blood glucose reading. Patients are advised to recalibrate or replace the glucometer.

3. Expired test strips

Blood glucose test strips have an expiration date. Test strips purchased long ago may have expired, leading to inaccurate or failed readings. Patients should replace them with newly purchased, unexpired strips.

In addition, if the blood glucose level from a fingerstick sample is extremely high—beyond the maximum value that the glucometer can display—the device will not show a proper reading, resulting in an apparent "failed" measurement. In such cases, prompt medical attention is required, and venous blood glucose testing should be performed. Diabetic patients are advised to learn how to properly and correctly use their glucometer for self-monitoring. If any abnormalities or discomfort occur, they should seek timely medical evaluation, undergo appropriate diagnostic tests, and follow prescribed treatments to avoid delays in managing their condition.
