Introduction
Patients can usually resume strenuous activities about 1 to 2 months after surgery for hemifacial spasm. The surgery generally refers to microvascular decompression, which effectively relieves the symptoms of hemifacial spasm by separating the nerves and blood vessels that are compressing each other in the face. Light exercise may be resumed approximately 7 days after surgery, but full recovery typically takes 1 to 2 months, after which vigorous physical activity is permissible.

Generally, patients can resume intense physical activities about 1 to 2 months after surgery for hemifacial spasm. Specific details are as follows:

Hemifacial spasm usually refers to paroxysmal, involuntary twitching of the muscles on one side of the face. It is typically caused by compression between the facial nerve and blood vessels, resulting in continuous pulsation that leads to intermittent facial twitching. When suffering from hemifacial spasm, symptoms can often be somewhat relieved through medication, acupuncture, radiofrequency treatment, or similar methods. The standard surgical treatment for hemifacial spasm is microvascular decompression, which involves separating the compressed facial nerve and blood vessels to effectively alleviate symptoms. Generally, light exercise may be resumed around 7 days after surgery, but full recovery usually takes 1 to 2 months before vigorous activities can be safely performed. Prior to complete recovery, patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness or headache, making intense physical activity inadvisable.

Patients are advised to avoid making exaggerated facial expressions after surgery and to keep the surgical wound clean and dry to prevent infection and support proper healing.
