Introduction
Abnormal position or movement of otoliths may cause dizziness, especially during sudden head movements or changes in posture. It can also lead to rapid, involuntary eye movements known as nystagmus. Patients may feel unbalanced, walk with an unsteady gait, and are prone to falling. In addition, symptoms such as blurred vision, a sense of fogginess, and confusion may occur. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly and receive standardized treatment under the guidance of a physician.
Under normal circumstances, otolith disease refers to a condition in which the otoliths (ear stones) in the inner ear become abnormal, leading to disturbances in balance function. Main symptoms include dizziness, persistent nystagmus, and balance disorders, analyzed as follows:
1. Dizziness
Abnormal positioning or movement of the otoliths may cause sensations of dizziness, especially during sudden head movements or changes in body position. The dizziness is usually brief, lasting from several seconds to minutes, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
2. Persistent Nystagmus
Nystagmus refers to involuntary, rapid eye movements. Abnormal stimulation from displaced otoliths may lead to sustained nystagmus, affecting visual stability.
3. Balance Disorders
Abnormally positioned otoliths may interfere with the function of balance receptors, causing patients to feel unsteady, stagger while walking, and become prone to falling.
