Introduction
Elevating the pillow is generally helpful for patients with reflux esophagitis, but it may be ineffective if the condition is severe. Reflux esophagitis is a digestive disorder primarily caused by factors such as poor eating habits. Prolonged overeating can lead to reduced clearance function in the esophagus, causing gastric contents to reflux into the esophagus and weakening esophageal motility.

Generally, elevating the pillow is helpful for patients with reflux esophagitis; however, if the condition is severe, this method may not be effective. The detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Helpful

Reflux esophagitis is a digestive disorder primarily caused by factors such as poor eating habits. Long-term overeating can reduce the clearance function of the esophagus, allowing gastric contents to reflux into the esophagus. This weakens esophageal motility, making it difficult to clear residual refluxed material from the esophageal wall, potentially triggering an inflammatory response and leading to reflux esophagitis. If the patient's condition is mild, elevating the pillow during rest can tilt the esophagus, reducing the likelihood of gastric reflux, thus proving beneficial.

2. Not effective

If the patient's condition is severe and acidic components in gastric acid have already damaged the esophageal mucosa, simply elevating the pillow is generally ineffective. Without timely treatment, inflammatory factors may continue to spread, potentially causing gastrointestinal perforation. In such cases, patients should follow medical advice and use medications such as pantoprazole sodium enteric-coated tablets or vonoprazan fumarate tablets.

It is recommended to eat smaller, more frequent meals, maintain regular bowel movements, and avoid increased abdominal pressure, which could worsen the condition.
