Introduction
Dry lips with a desire to drink water may be caused by physiological reasons, or by conditions such as stomatitis or diabetes. If you normally drink little water or engage in excessive physical activity, thirst may easily occur; this is a normal physiological phenomenon and does not require specific treatment if no other symptoms are present. Besides the above causes, hyperthyroidism could also be a possible reason.

Dry lips accompanied by thirst may result from physiological factors, or could be caused by conditions such as stomatitis or diabetes. A detailed analysis is as follows:

I. Physiological Causes

If one drinks insufficient water regularly or engages in excessive physical activity, thirst may occur, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. If no other symptoms are present, special treatment is usually not required.

II. Pathological Causes

1. Stomatitis

Stomatitis refers to inflammatory damage of the oral mucosal epithelial cells, possibly related to bacterial or viral infections. During illness, reduced saliva secretion from salivary glands may lead to symptoms such as dry mouth and throat, and thirst. Treatment may include medications such as cefuroxime axetil tablets or acyclovir ointment, under medical supervision.

2. Diabetes

In diabetes, elevated blood glucose levels exceed the reabsorption capacity of the renal tubules, leading to frequent urination. This process removes large amounts of fluid from the body, causing dehydration and resulting in symptoms of dry mouth and thirst. Treatment may include medications such as metformin hydrochloride tablets or acarbose tablets, under medical supervision.

Besides the above-mentioned causes, dry lips and thirst may also result from hyperthyroidism, Sjögren's syndrome, hypernatremia, and other conditions. It is important to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, engage in appropriate physical exercise, and enhance the body’s resistance to disease.
