What causes a sore throat and dry lips?
In general, a sore throat accompanied by dry lips may be related to overuse, dry environment, allergic reactions, medication side effects, laryngitis, or other causes. Treatment may involve lifestyle adjustments or medications.
1. Overuse: Prolonged talking, singing, or shouting may lead to throat pain. Overusing the voice can cause inflammation and discomfort of the vocal cords, and may also result in dry lips. Avoiding these behaviors can help alleviate symptoms.
2. Dry environment: Dry air and low humidity can cause chapped lips. Indoor heating, air conditioning, dry seasons, or the low-humidity climates found in high-altitude regions may contribute to this condition. Dry lips may accompany throat discomfort, as dry environments can affect the mucous membranes of the throat. Drinking more water can help relieve these symptoms.
3. Allergic reactions: Allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or food allergies may cause a sore throat and dry lips. Allergic reactions are often accompanied by other symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. Medications such as cetirizine hydrochloride tablets or loratadine tablets may be used under medical guidance.
4. Medication side effects: Some medications may cause throat pain and dry lips as side effects. These include certain antidepressants, antiallergy drugs, antihypertensive medications, and oral drugs. It is recommended to adjust dosage or switch medications under a doctor's supervision.
5. Laryngitis: Laryngitis refers to infection of the larynx, commonly caused by bacteria or viruses. A sore throat is often one of the main symptoms of throat infection, and may be accompanied by fever and throat discomfort. This condition may also lead to dry lips. Medications such as Shufeng Jiedu Capsules or Yinhuang Throat Lozenges may be used as directed by a physician.
If symptoms persist or worsen, patients should seek immediate medical attention to prevent further deterioration of the condition.
