Swelling may last for several days after removal of the Kirschner wires.
In general, swelling after removal of Kirschner wires (K-wires) may last for 1 to 2 weeks, or it could extend to 3 to 4 weeks. Specific analysis is as follows:
1. 1–2 weeks
Kirschner wires are widely used in clinical practice and can be used with external fixators to stabilize pelvic fractures, calcaneal fractures, etc., or for temporary fixation of bone fragments during orthopedic surgeries. If an individual has a relatively fast metabolism and applies local cold or heat therapy to promote blood circulation, the duration of localized swelling after K-wire removal may be shorter, typically lasting about 1 to 2 weeks.
2. 3–4 weeks
If an individual has a slower metabolism or does not perform any interventions to reduce swelling, the time required for swelling resolution may be longer, possibly lasting 3 to 4 weeks.
Functional exercises are not recommended until swelling has completely subsided, to avoid exacerbating swelling due to overexertion. It is advisable to wait until the swelling has fully resolved before beginning rehabilitation exercises. When starting exercises, a gradual approach is recommended, avoiding excessive intensity at the beginning.
