Epley Maneuver Procedure Steps
Under normal circumstances, patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may suddenly experience rotational dizziness or vertigo, which can generally be treated using the canalith repositioning procedure. The specific steps are as follows:
1. Instruct the patient to sit upright on the bed. Stand behind the patient, support their head, and quickly turn it 45 degrees toward the affected side.
2. Then rapidly lower the patient into a supine position, keeping the head extended over the edge of the bed and the affected ear facing downward. Maintain this position for at least 30 seconds.
3. Once the sensation of vertigo subsides, gradually return the head to the midline. Repeat the same maneuver on the opposite side.
4. Rotate both the head and body together 90 degrees toward the healthy side, so that the head forms a 45-degree angle with the ground. Hold this position for at least 30 seconds.
5. After the vertigo resolves, slowly turn the head to face forward, then help the patient sit up slowly. Keep the head slightly flexed forward for about one minute to achieve proper repositioning of the otoliths.
If the treatment is ineffective, seek medical attention at a qualified hospital promptly to avoid delays in diagnosis and management. Maintaining good daily habits can aid recovery. This procedure should always be performed under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
