COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a chronic condition primarily characterized by airway obstruction and destruction of lung tissue, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, and sputum production. Its pathogenesis involves long-term smoking, air pollution, and genetic factors. In addition, it may also be associated with chronic bronchitis, oxidative stress, and immune responses.

1. Long-term smoking

Smoking is the most significant risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Harmful substances in tobacco smoke irritate the airway mucosa, causing airway inflammation and obstruction. In general, symptoms may improve after quitting smoking.

2. Air pollution

Prolonged exposure to air pollution—such as industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust—can lead to airway inflammation and lung tissue damage, thereby increasing the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Individuals should promptly remove themselves from heavily polluted environments and, under medical guidance, use medications such as salbutamol sulfate aerosol, salmeterol inhalers, or terbutaline nebulizing solution to relieve symptoms.

3. Genetics

The development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with genetic factors; certain gene mutations may lead to lung tissue destruction and airway obstruction. In such cases, medications like ipratropium bromide solution or tiotropium bromide powder inhalation can be used to alleviate symptoms.
