Method for blood collection via PICC catheter placement
PICC refers to the placement of a central venous catheter through a peripheral vein. PICC allows for blood drawing, laboratory tests, and greatly facilitates treatment while reducing patient discomfort. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Position the patient in a supine position with the arm abducted at 90 degrees, then measure the distance from the intended puncture site along the vein's path to the right sternoclavicular joint, then downward to the level of the third intercostal space.
2. Open the PICC sterile kit, put on sterile gloves, and check all instruments and equipment.
3. Disinfect the area extending 10 cm above and below the puncture site, covering both sides of the arm.
4. Insert the needle at a 15–30 degree angle relative to the skin, directly into the vein. Once blood return is observed, lower the angle of insertion, advance the introducer needle, ensure the tip of the introducer sheath remains within the vein, and then insert the catheter.
5. Slowly and steadily advance the catheter uniformly into the vein with even, gentle pressure.
6. Use the index finger of the left hand to apply pressure at the injection site, then withdraw the puncture needle through the catheter.
7. Next, draw blood using a syringe, remove the syringe, and flush and cap the catheter to complete the procedure.
Avoid lifting heavy objects with the arm where the catheter is placed, to prevent dislodgement or displacement of the catheter due to vigorous movement. It is recommended that PICC catheter placement and blood sampling be performed at a正规 medical facility by trained healthcare professionals.
