How to reduce leg swelling quickly
Leg edema should be treated according to the underlying cause. Since the causes of edema vary, treatment methods differ accordingly, and thus there is no single fastest way to eliminate it. Treatment may include elevating the affected limb and applying heat.
1. When leg swelling occurs, the patient should lie flat and elevate both legs, which helps accelerate venous blood return and reduce leg edema.
2. After elevating the limb, soak a towel or gauze in hot water at a temperature tolerable to the skin (60–80°C), wring it out, and apply it folded over the swollen area.
3. Replace the hot towel every 3–5 minutes, continuing the heat application for 15–30 minutes.
Leg edema may also be associated with conditions such as liver cirrhosis, deep venous valve insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, hypothyroidism, or phlebitis. Patients should visit a hospital for proper evaluation to determine the exact cause. Once diagnosed, following medical advice is essential for effective and timely resolution of the swelling.
