Why does a child cry and kick their legs at night?
Children may cry, fuss, or kick their legs at night due to various reasons such as excessive room temperature, nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting), calcium deficiency, indigestion, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In general, appropriate treatment strategies can be selected based on the specific cause to improve symptoms.
1. Excessive Temperature
This may be caused by high indoor temperature during sleep or overly thick bedding. Symptoms usually improve once the room temperature is lowered or the thickness of bedding is reduced.
2. Nocturnal Enuresis
This condition is related to physiological development and involves poor control of urination at night, which may cause the child to wake up due to nighttime urination and feel uncomfortable. Reducing fluid intake before bedtime and avoiding foods high in water content can help decrease the frequency of nocturnal urination and improve symptoms.
3. Calcium Deficiency
Children who are picky eaters may develop calcium deficiency due to inadequate nutritional intake. Low calcium levels in the body can increase excitability of the brain and autonomic nervous system, leading to restlessness at night. It is recommended to take calcium supplements such as calcium gluconate oral solution, calcium carbonate D3 granules, or calcium lactate granules under medical supervision to replenish calcium and alleviate symptoms.
4. Indigestion
Indigestion may occur if a child eats too much, consumes complex meals, or ingests raw, cold, or greasy foods before bedtime, when gastrointestinal motility naturally slows down. Under medical guidance, medications such as Bacillus subtilis bivalent live bacterial granules, pediatric compound pancreatin powder, or Jianwei Xiaoshi tablets may be used to enhance gastrointestinal motility and relieve indigestion.
5. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
Children with ADHD may be more impulsive and find it difficult to settle down at night, often exhibiting crying, leg-kicking, frequent turning, or difficulty falling asleep. Cognitive behavioral therapy can improve self-control and help alleviate symptoms of inattention and impulsivity. If necessary, medication prescribed by a doctor—such as atomoxetine hydrochloride capsules, tiapride hydrochloride tablets, or Dimu Ningshen oral solution—may be required to manage the condition.
If symptoms persist for a prolonged period without improvement, timely medical evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
