Introduction
Toothache and tongue pain may be caused by excessive stomach heat (gastric fire). Gastric fire arises from factors such as invasion of heat pathogens, consumption of spicy foods, or excessive alcohol intake, leading to an intense internal heat in the stomach. This heat travels upward along the meridians, causing pain in the teeth and tongue. Therefore, toothache and tongue pain are often attributed to gastric fire, and treatment may include medications such as Niuhuang Jiedu Pian (Bezoar Detoxifying Tablets) or Niuhuang Shangqing Pian (Bezoar Clearing Tablets), under medical guidance. In daily life, it is advisable to avoid consuming scallions, ginger, garlic, and similar foods to prevent exacerbation of stomach fire.

Generally, toothache and tongue pain are caused by excessive stomach fire.

Stomach fire is usually triggered by factors such as invasion of heat pathogens, consumption of spicy foods, or excessive alcohol intake, leading to an intense internal heat in the stomach. This heat travels upward along the meridians, causing pain in the tongue and teeth. Therefore, toothache and tongue pain are often attributed to stomach fire and can be treated with medications such as Niuhuang Jiedu Pian (Bezoar Detoxifying Tablets) or Niuhuang Shangqing Pian (Bezoar Clearing-Heat Tablets), under medical guidance. If accompanied by excessive liver fire—often associated with hyperactivity of liver yang due to deficiency of yin in the liver and kidneys—medications such as Qiju Dihuang Wan (Lycium and Chrysanthemum Rehmannia Pills) or Jiawei Xiaoyao Wan (Augmented Free-and-Easy Wanderer Pills) may be taken under a doctor’s supervision to clear and reduce liver fire. In cases of deficient kidney yin in the lower burner, symptoms such as bloating and a feeling of fullness in the stomach may frequently occur. Under medical advice, prokinetic agents or Jianwei Xiaoshi Oral Liquid (Digestive Tonic Oral Liquid) may be used to enhance gastric motility and improve indigestion. Alongside medication, dietary adjustments, proper sleep routines, and physical therapies such as massage and warm compresses should be combined to comprehensively alleviate symptoms.

In daily life, it is recommended to eat light, easily digestible foods and avoid pungent, irritating ingredients such as scallions, ginger, and garlic, which may aggravate stomach fire and damage the gastric mucosa.
