Difficulty swallowing saliva, feeling like suffocating—what could be the cause?
Generally, difficulty swallowing saliva and a sensation of suffocation may be related to excessive tension or anxiety, allergic reactions, acute laryngitis, reflux pharyngitis, or acute suppurative tonsillitis. Patients are advised to seek medical attention promptly and receive symptomatic treatment as directed by a physician. Specific analyses are as follows:

1. Excessive Tension or Anxiety
When in a state of high tension or anxiety, the body's sympathetic nervous system becomes activated, which may cause throat muscle tension. Spasms or excessive contraction of the throat muscles can make swallowing saliva difficult and create a sensation similar to suffocation. It is recommended to try relaxing through deep breathing. Sit or lie down in a quiet place, inhale slowly and deeply until your abdomen fills with air, then exhale gradually. Repeat this process several times.
2. Allergic Reaction
Exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or certain foods may trigger an allergic reaction in the throat. Allergies can cause swelling and itching of the throat mucosa, and the muscles may also spasm. In such cases, swallowing saliva becomes difficult, and a feeling of suffocation may occur due to partial airway obstruction. It is important to avoid known allergens as much as possible. If allergic symptoms have already appeared, gargling with mild saline solution may help reduce throat inflammation and itching.
3. Acute Laryngitis
This condition may result from overuse of the voice or infection, often causing swelling in the throat that leads to difficulty swallowing saliva, hoarseness, and other symptoms. In severe cases, a sensation of suffocation may occur. Under medical guidance, patients may use medications such as prednisone acetate tablets, hydrocortisone tablets, or dexamethasone sodium phosphate injection for treatment.
4. Reflux Pharyngitis
When stomach contents reflux into the pharynx, they can cause edema of the pharyngeal mucosa. This may lead to difficulty swallowing saliva at the entrance of the esophagus. Additionally, when mucus enters the larynx and trachea, it may cause breathlessness and a sensation of suffocation. Under medical supervision, patients may be treated with medications such as Lanqin oral liquid, omeprazole enteric-coated capsules, or cisapride tablets.
5. Acute Suppurative Tonsillitis
Acute suppurative tonsillitis may be triggered by high work pressure, frequent late nights, excessive exposure to harmful gases, smoking, or alcohol consumption. Common symptoms include sore throat and difficulty swallowing, along with the aforementioned sensations. Under medical guidance, patients may take medications such as cefprozil tablets, sustained-release cefaclor tablets, or amoxicillin tablets for treatment.
In daily life, a light diet is recommended. Avoid spicy and irritating foods such as garlic, spicy hot pot, and mustard. Adequate rest should be maintained, and excessive fatigue should be avoided to prevent adverse effects on overall health.
