What to do for major arterial bleeding
In general, major arterial bleeding can lead to severe blood loss and even cause hemorrhagic shock, which may endanger life. Immediate first aid using pressure dressing is required for major arterial bleeding. The specific steps are as follows:
1. In case of major arterial bleeding, immediately press the wound with a thick gauze pad. If gauze is unavailable, use clean towels, clothing, or similar materials to apply firm pressure on the wound.
2. Fold a bandage or triangular bandage into a strip about 10 cm wide. Wrap this strip around one end of the gauze in circular turns 2–3 times, then proceed with spiral wrapping, overlapping each turn by two-thirds of the previous one, until the entire gauze pad is completely covered.
3. Finish with 2–3 additional circular turns and secure the bandage with a knot.
After applying pressure dressing, monitor blood circulation at the distal end of the injured limb. If bleeding persists despite these measures, seek medical attention promptly.
