Introduction
In general, foul-smelling and unformed stools may be caused by malabsorption of fat, intestinal dysbiosis, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, or other conditions. In daily life, it is advisable to avoid consuming spicy, raw, or cold irritants such as chili peppers, mustard, chilled watermelon, and ice cream, to prevent gastrointestinal irritation and severe discomfort.

In general, foul-smelling, unformed stools may be caused by malabsorption of fat, intestinal dysbiosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pancreatitis, or ulcerative colitis. If discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek medical treatment promptly. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. Fat Malabsorption

When the digestive tract fails to effectively absorb fat, excessive fat is excreted, resulting in greasy, unformed stools accompanied by a foul odor, diarrhea, and weight loss. This condition can be improved by addressing the underlying digestive disorder.

2. Intestinal Dysbiosis

An imbalance in gut microbiota can lead to abnormal fermentation of food in the intestines, producing excessive gas that irritates the intestinal wall and increases intestinal motility. This results in foul-smelling, unformed stools, often accompanied by bloating and nausea. Probiotics such as Lactasin tablets, Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecalis live bacterial granules, or Bifidobacterium live bacterial capsules may be taken as directed by a physician.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Abnormal intestinal motility leads to disordered gastrointestinal movement. Due to rapid transit, stool does not have sufficient time to form properly, resulting in foul-smelling, unformed stools, along with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, and bloating. Medications such as mebeverine hydrochloride tablets, alverine citrate capsules, or pinaverium bromide tablets may be used as prescribed to improve symptoms.

4. Pancreatitis

Insufficient secretion of digestive enzymes by the pancreas impairs normal digestion of fats and proteins, easily leading to steatorrhea (fatty diarrhea), which causes foul-smelling, unformed stools, often greasy in appearance, accompanied by diarrhea. Symptom relief may include medications such as acetaminophen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, or ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, taken as directed by a physician.

5. Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease primarily affecting the mucosal layer of the colon, causing chronic inflammation and ulcer formation. Patients with ulcerative colitis may experience foul-smelling stools and diarrhea due to damaged intestinal mucosa. The condition may also disrupt normal intestinal motility, leading to unformed stools. It is recommended to follow medical advice and use medications such as mesalazine enteric-coated tablets, sulfasalazine enteric-coated tablets, or prednisolone acetate tablets to manage the condition.

In daily life, avoid consuming spicy, raw, or cold irritating foods such as chili peppers, mustard, chilled watermelon, and ice cream, as they may adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract and cause significant discomfort.
