Is it good for infants to sleep on latex pillows?
Generally, it is not recommended for infants to sleep on latex pillows, as this may affect spinal development and increase the risk of suffocation.
Latex pillows provide strong support. An infant's cervical spine is just beginning to develop and mostly remains in a flat position without forming natural physiological curves. Using a latex pillow at this stage may interfere with normal spinal development. Additionally, latex has relatively poor breathability; if the pillow is too high or too firm, it could increase the risk of suffocation, especially when the baby rolls over or sleeps on their side.
The proteins in latex may trigger allergic reactions in some infants, such as skin itching and redness. Although such cases are relatively rare, parents should still remain vigilant.
Therefore, it is generally advised that infants at this stage avoid using pillows altogether, or alternatively use a very thin, breathable cotton pad instead. Parents should also closely monitor their baby’s sleeping posture and head development, adjusting the sleep environment and pillow height as needed.
