What is Misoprostol Tablet?
Misoprostol is a derivative of prostaglandin E1. It is used to treat duodenal ulcers, prevent NSAID-induced peptic ulcers, and terminate early pregnancy. It inhibits gastric acid secretion and prevents ulcer formation, thereby protecting the gastric mucosa. Additionally, it induces contractions of the pregnant uterus and is clinically used sequentially with mifepristone for medical abortion.

What is Misoprostol?
Misoprostol is a synthetic derivative of prostaglandin E1. It is used to treat duodenal ulcers, prevent NSAID-induced peptic ulcers, and induce medical abortion. It inhibits gastric acid secretion and prevents ulcer formation, thereby protecting the gastric mucosa. Additionally, it exerts a contractile effect on the pregnant uterus. Clinically, misoprostol is administered sequentially with mifepristone for medical abortion. In women undergoing pregnancy termination, physiological responses typically begin shortly after taking misoprostol. Patients should avoid eating or drinking anything—including water—immediately before or after dosing, as this may compromise drug efficacy. Following medical abortion, patients must visit a healthcare facility for observation; physicians will assess whether the gestational sac has been completely expelled. Furthermore, mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and lower abdominal pain may occur post-administration. Rarely, some women may experience facial flushing, fever, or palmar pruritus—all of which usually resolve within two hours. If symptoms persist beyond this timeframe, prompt consultation with a physician is advised.

1. Misoprostol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug, severe hepatic or renal impairment, or altered physical appearance (e.g., discoloration, crumbling) of the tablets. It is also contraindicated in patients with glaucoma, allergic colitis, or asthma.
2. Misoprostol effectively suppresses gastric acid secretion and protects the gastric mucosa, making it beneficial for treating gastric and duodenal ulcers. During treatment, patients should maintain a bland diet and avoid spicy or irritating foods. Importantly, misoprostol is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy—except when used in combination with mifepristone for medical abortion in healthy women with intrauterine pregnancies of up to seven weeks’ gestation who voluntarily opt for pharmacologic termination.
