Can skin graft scars be completely eliminated?
In general, whether skin graft scars can be completely eliminated depends on the severity of the scar. Superficial and small fresh scars can usually be completely removed; however, deeper, larger, or mature scars that have already formed may not be entirely eliminated.
For superficial, small, and fresh scars, complete removal may be possible through scientifically sound and appropriate treatments—such as laser therapy, microneedling, or using professional scar treatment products—combined with a healthy diet and meticulous care, allowing the skin's appearance to closely resemble its pre-injury state.
For deeper, larger, or established mature scars, especially those affecting the deep layers of the skin and impairing skin function, complete elimination is significantly more difficult. These scars may require multiple surgeries and long-term treatment for improvement, but the likelihood of full removal remains low.
In daily care, patients should keep newly formed scars dry and avoid contact with water, maintain local cleanliness and dryness, and follow medical advice for dressing changes to prevent secondary infection. In terms of diet, it is advisable to avoid overly spicy or greasy foods, which may stimulate scar hypertrophy.
