Will asymptomatic感染者 remain asymptomatic indefinitely?

Introduction
Some asymptomatic infected individuals may be in the incubation period—during which no clinical symptoms have yet appeared, although nucleic acid testing yields a positive result. After a period of asymptomatic infection, clinical symptoms may emerge if the individual’s immune function becomes compromised. Thus, asymptomatic infection may progress to symptomatic disease after some time. Following viral exposure, most people will develop symptoms.

Asymptomatic感染者—literally meaning “infection without symptoms”—refers to individuals infected with a pathogen who exhibit no clinical symptoms. This condition is commonly observed in patients with relatively robust immune systems; following infection, their bodies mount no pronounced immune response and thus display no overt clinical manifestations. But will asymptomatic感染者 remain symptom-free indefinitely? Below, we provide answers to this question.

Will asymptomatic感染者 remain symptom-free indefinitely?

Some asymptomatic感染者 may still be in the incubation period—i.e., they have not yet developed clinical symptoms, although their nucleic acid test results are positive. After a period of asymptomatic infection, if their immunity declines, clinical symptoms may subsequently emerge. Thus, asymptomatic infection may progress to symptomatic disease over time. Upon viral exposure, most individuals develop noticeable symptoms—a condition termed “overt (or symptomatic) infection.” Conversely, some individuals experience no symptoms whatsoever after infection—termed “covert (or asymptomatic) infection.” The primary reason for asymptomatic infection lies in the patient’s strong resistance: upon viral entry, the virus is rapidly phagocytosed by immune cells (e.g., macrophages), and specific antibodies are generated, thereby preventing clinical manifestations. However, as time passes and phagocytic capacity wanes, previously asymptomatic individuals may begin exhibiting clinical symptoms—most commonly fever, dry cough, and fatigue.

Knowledge Extension: How are asymptomatic感染者 identified?

1. Through nucleic acid testing performed during medical observation of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

2. Through proactive screening of populations known to have been exposed to the virus.
