Introduction
The masseter muscle usually cannot be reduced in size through massage. From the perspective of muscle physiology, long-term overuse of the masseter muscle can lead to thickening of muscle fibers. While massage may help inhibit further thickening to some extent, it generally does not reduce the muscle size. Moreover, if masseter hypertrophy is caused by genetic factors, it is typically due to the inherent structure and physiological characteristics of the muscle itself.

The masseter muscle usually cannot be reduced in size through massage. From the perspective of muscle physiology, long-term overuse of the masseter muscle can cause thickening of muscle fibers. While massage may help to some extent in preventing further hypertrophy, it generally does not reduce the size of the muscle. Additionally, if masseter hypertrophy is caused by genetic factors—such as a naturally higher number or denser distribution of muscle fibers—massage is unlikely to alter the fundamental structure of the muscle.

Masseter hypertrophy is typically caused by genetic factors, improper diet, teeth clenching, unilateral chewing, or abnormal jawbone development, and generally cannot be reduced through massage. In daily life, one should avoid eating overly hard or chewy foods and reduce the frequency and intensity of chewing, which helps relax the masseter muscle. If the masseter muscle is excessively developed and affects facial aesthetics, medical aesthetic treatments such as injection of botulinum toxin type A, radiofrequency ablation, or masseter reduction surgery may be considered.

Analysis of Causes of Masseter Hypertrophy:

Cause

Genetic Factors

Improper Diet

Teeth Clenching

Unilateral Chewing

Abnormal Jaw Development

Causes Analysis

Naturally well-developed masseter muscles

Frequent chewing of hard foods requires repeated effort from the masseter muscle, leading to constant exercise and enlargement

Prolonged teeth clenching keeps the masseter muscle in a contracted state, promoting excessive development

Consistently using only one side of the teeth for chewing leads to hypertrophy of the masseter on that side

Individuals with wide mandibular angles or jawbone deformities often have more developed masseter muscles

Symptoms

The facial contour may appear square or broad

A noticeable bulge forms in the area where the masseter muscle is located

Obvious muscle prominence appears near the masseter and temporal muscles

The mandible may become more robust due to increased chewing pressure

The overall face may appear shorter; masseter hypertrophy is mainly concentrated on both sides of the cheeks

Characteristics

Symmetrical on both sides of the face

Increased strength of the masseter muscle

Asymmetry of facial muscles

Facial asymmetry

Bony mandibular protrusion

Analysis of Treatment Options for Masseter Reduction:

Treatment Name

Botulinum Toxin Type A Injection

Radiofrequency Ablation

Masseter Muscle Resection

Principle

Blocks signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction, causing the masseter muscle to relax and atrophy, thereby reducing its volume

Uses thermal energy generated by high-frequency electromagnetic waves to target masseter tissue

Surgical incision made inside the mouth or behind the ear to expose the masseter muscle, followed by partial removal of the muscle tissue

Indications

Excessively wide lower face due to masseter hypertrophy

Moderate to severe masseter hypertrophy

Severe masseter hypertrophy
