What is the simplest method for curing onychomycosis (gray nail) with povidone-iodine?
Generally, gray nail is usually a case of onychomycosis (nail fungus). Povidone-iodine alone typically cannot completely cure onychomycosis; antifungal medications are required for effective treatment.
Onychomycosis is a nail disorder caused by dermatophytes invading the nail plate or nail bed, commonly presenting as nail plate opacity, thickening, brittleness, discoloration, or detachment. Since povidone-iodine itself does not have antifungal properties, using it alone cannot cure onychomycosis.
During the treatment of onychomycosis, povidone-iodine can initially be used for disinfection to prevent the spread of infection. After disinfection, a cotton swab can be used to apply antifungal medications, such as compound ketoconazole cream or bifonazole cream, which have antifungal effects. However, medication should strictly follow medical advice. Only with active treatment can onychomycosis be cured.
For patients with more severe symptoms of onychomycosis, when topical treatments are ineffective, oral antifungal medications, such as itraconazole capsules or terbinafine hydrochloride tablets, can be taken under a doctor's guidance.
During treatment, it is necessary to wash feet daily, maintain foot hygiene and dryness, and avoid fungal growth. At the same time, choose breathable and soft material shoes and socks to reduce foot pressure and friction, thus promoting recovery.
