Introduction
Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, specifically changes in estrogen and progesterone levels, cause breast tissue proliferation and edema, leading to breast tenderness and sensitivity. This may be a normal phenomenon; wearing a well-fitting bra to provide support and reducing intake of caffeine and salt may help. During pregnancy, hormone levels rise sharply, causing breast tissue growth and preparing for milk production.

Normally, nipple pain may be caused by factors such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, improper underwear, nipple inflammation, mastitis, and others. It is recommended that patients seek timely medical treatment in accordance with a physician's instructions. The analysis is as follows:

  1. Menstrual cycle: Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, particularly changes in estrogen and progesterone levels, can cause breast tissue proliferation and edema, leading to nipple distension, pain, and sensitivity. This may be a normal phenomenon; wearing a well-fitting bra to provide support and reducing intake of caffeine and salt may help alleviate symptoms.

  2. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, rapid increases in hormone levels stimulate breast tissue growth in preparation for lactation, which may cause breast tenderness. During lactation, active breast function and milk production may also cause nipple pain. Ensuring proper feeding posture during breastfeeding can help prevent nipple discomfort.

  3. Improper underwear: Compression and friction from ill-fitting undergarments may damage the nipple skin or impede blood circulation, leading to pain. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, or skin damage on the nipple. Choosing appropriately sized, soft, and comfortable undergarments while avoiding overly tight or coarse materials is recommended.

  4. Nipple inflammation: Trauma or bacterial infection of the nipple may lead to inflammation, presenting as redness, swelling, pain, and even discharge. Maintaining nipple hygiene and applying warm compresses can help reduce inflammation. When necessary, follow medical advice to apply medications such as erythromycin ointment, mupirocin ointment, or ampicillin tablets for treatment.

  5. Mastitis: Bacteria may enter the breast through a cracked nipple, causing infection and resulting in redness, swelling, warmth in the breast, possible nipple pain, fever, chills, and other signs of infection. Patients should use medications such as minocycline hydrochloride capsules, cefixime dispersible tablets, or cefuroxime axetil tablets as directed by a physician to aid recovery.

In daily life, it is advisable to maintain a cheerful mood and avoid excessive emotional excitement. Additionally, maintaining regular rest patterns and avoiding overexertion are recommended.
