How to Self-Test Blood Sugar
Generally, blood glucose can be self-tested using methods such as fingertip blood glucose testing, palm blood sampling, continuous glucose monitoring systems, urine glucose testing, and glycated hemoglobin testing.
1. Fingertip Blood Glucose Testing: First, disinfect the fingertip with an alcohol swab. After allowing the alcohol to evaporate completely, load the lancet into the lancing device and adjust the penetration depth. Firmly press the lancing device against the side of the finger, press the button to obtain a blood sample, and gently touch the blood droplet to the sampling area of the test strip. Once the blood is automatically drawn into the test strip, the glucose meter will automatically count down and display the blood glucose value.
2. Palm Blood Sampling: After disinfection, use a dedicated lancing device or lancet to collect blood from the palm area. Place a drop of the collected blood sample onto the blood glucose test strip and insert the strip into the glucose meter for testing to obtain the blood glucose value.
3. Continuous Glucose Monitoring System: A continuous glucose monitoring system consists of a glucose sensor, transmitter, and receiver. During use, the current glucose level, glucose fluctuation trends, and historical glucose data can be viewed anytime via the receiver.
4. Urine Glucose Testing: Collect a clean midstream urine sample. Immerse the urine glucose test strip into the urine, then remove it and wait for the specified time. Compare the color of the test strip with the color chart on the test strip packaging to determine the approximate level of glucose in the urine.
5. Glycated Hemoglobin Testing: Glycated hemoglobin testing instruments generally use fingertip capillary blood or venous blood as the sample. Collect the required amount of blood according to the instrument instructions, and mix it with the testing reagent to allow the reaction to occur. This test helps patients understand their long-term blood glucose control status.
There are various methods for blood glucose testing. Patients are advised to choose an appropriate testing method based on their individual circumstances and medical advice, and to periodically visit a hospital for venous blood glucose testing to calibrate self-test results.
