Generally, phenylketonuria (PKU) is a hereditary disease caused by an enzyme deficiency in the metabolic pathway of phenylalanine, leading to impaired phenylalanine metabolism. Preventive measures for PKU include optimizing reproductive planning, prenatal care and examinations, dietary management, environmental improvements, and early intervention. If the condition is severe, prompt medical attention is recommended. Detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Optimize Reproductive Planning

It is important to develop a sound reproductive plan, especially avoiding consanguineous marriages, as these may increase the risk of inherited diseases, thereby increasing the likelihood of PKU. Additionally, it is essential to determine whether there is a family history of genetic disorders before marriage.

2. Prenatal Care and Examinations

Before conception, genetic history screening should be performed to assess for possible chromosomal abnormalities. During pregnancy, regular prenatal checkups should be conducted to evaluate fetal development.

3. Dietary Management

If diagnosed with PKU, prevention should begin with dietary adjustments to reduce the likelihood of disease progression. A bland diet is recommended, with reduced intake of high-protein foods such as meat and dairy products.

4. Environmental Improvement

The living environment should maintain a suitable temperature and humidity. It is recommended to keep the temperature around 24°C and humidity between 30%-40% to reduce the risk of catching a chill or infections. Additionally, exposure to substances that may worsen symptoms, such as chemicals and toxic gases, should be avoided.

5. Early Intervention

Once symptoms of PKU are detected, early intervention should be promptly initiated to reduce the likelihood of disease progression and control the condition. This includes timely medication or psychological adjustment.

It should be noted that PKU generally has a good prognosis with timely treatment; however, delayed treatment may affect intellectual development. Therefore, prompt and standardized treatment under a physician's guidance is essential to avoid delays in managing the condition.
