Introduction
Iodine tincture, also known as iodine solution, generally differs from iodophor in composition, antimicrobial effectiveness, application method, indications, and staining characteristics. Both iodine tincture and iodophor should be stored away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. When using iodine tincture and iodophor, one should observe any color changes and use them up within their expiration dates.

Iodine tincture, also known as iodine solution, generally differs from povidone-iodine in composition, germicidal effectiveness, method of use, application scope, and staining characteristics. The specific differences are analyzed below:

  1. Composition

The main components of iodine tincture are iodine, potassium iodide, and ethanol. Povidone-iodine primarily consists of an amorphous complex of iodine with surface-active agents such as polyvinylpyrrolidone. Its solvent is usually water, although alcohol-based povidone-iodine also exists, but with a lower ethanol content than iodine tincture.

  2. Germicidal Effectiveness

Iodine tincture is a highly effective disinfectant capable of killing various pathogens, including bacteria, spores, protozoa, fungi, and influenza viruses. Compared to iodine tincture, povidone-iodine has a weaker germicidal effect and slightly reduced persistence, as the iodine tends to volatilize more quickly after disinfection.

  3. Method of Use

When using iodine tincture, it should be applied and allowed to remain for several minutes before being removed with 70% alcohol to avoid prolonged skin irritation. Povidone-iodine can be directly applied to wounds without the need for deiodination, making it more suitable for disinfection of sensitive areas such as skin and mucous membranes.

  4. Application Scope

Iodine tincture is mainly used for disinfection of intact skin, such as preoperative skin preparation. Due to its strong irritancy, it cannot be used for disinfection of mucous membranes or broken skin. Povidone-iodine has a broader range of applications and can be used not only for skin disinfection but also for disinfection of mucous membranes, burns, frostbite, and other types of wounds.

  5. Staining Characteristics

After disinfection with iodine tincture, a noticeable yellow-brown mark remains on the skin, which is difficult to remove. This may affect appearance but typically does not cause long-term effects. Disinfection with povidone-iodine also causes some staining, but the color is lighter and easier to wash off.

Both iodine tincture and povidone-iodine should be stored away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. When using either iodine tincture or povidone-iodine, one should observe any color changes and use them promptly before the expiration date.
