The Efficacy and Function of Stone Fern (Phlegmariurus fortunei)
Shichangsheng is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb generally known for its functions and effects of nourishing yin to clear heat, improving vision and intelligence, cooling blood to stop bleeding, promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, and nourishing the liver and kidneys.
1. Nourishing Yin to Clear Heat
Shichangsheng has the effect of nourishing yin and clearing heat. It can nourish the yin of the lungs and stomach, alleviating symptoms such as dry mouth and throat pain caused by excessive internal heat due to yin deficiency. The polysaccharides in Shichangsheng can enhance immune function and improve disease resistance, while the alkaloids it contains can regulate endocrine function, achieving a heat-clearing and detoxifying effect.
2. Improving Vision and Enhancing Cognitive Function
The flavonoids and vitamin A present in Shichangsheng provide good benefits for eye health, helping to prevent vision deterioration and relieve eye fatigue. At the same time, Dendrobium (Shihuw) can improve cerebral blood circulation and increase oxygen supply to the brain, aiding in enhancing memory and cognitive abilities.
3. Cooling Blood and Stopping Bleeding
Shichangsheng can cool the blood and stop bleeding, making it suitable for symptoms such as hemoptysis, hematochezia, hematuria, and metrorrhagia caused by blood heat. Its blood-cooling action helps alleviate bleeding disorders caused by excessive blood heat. In treating hemoptysis or hematochezia, Shichangsheng is often combined with other herbs such as Sanguisorba root (Diyu) and Imperata root (Baimaogen).
4. Promoting Blood Circulation and Removing Blood Stasis
Shichangsheng has the effect of promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis, making it suitable for conditions such as traumatic injuries, blood stasis with swelling and pain, and irregular menstruation. Its blood-activating properties help improve circulation, eliminate blood stagnation, and relieve pain. When treating traumatic injuries, Shichangsheng is commonly used in combination with Frankincense (Ruxiang) and Myrrh (Moyao).
5. Nourishing the Liver and Kidneys
With a sweet taste, Shichangsheng enters the liver and kidney meridians and has the function of nourishing the liver and kidneys. It is suitable for symptoms such as soreness and weakness of the waist and knees and dim eyesight with tinnitus caused by liver and kidney deficiency. Its nourishing effect can alleviate conditions associated with weakness of the liver and kidneys.
