What are the causes of subacute thyroiditis?
Generally, subacute thyroiditis is caused by abnormal iodine intake, prolonged mental stress, viral infections, mumps, and autoimmune thyroiditis. Prompt medical attention is necessary, and treatment should be administered according to medical advice. Details are as follows:

1. Abnormal iodine intake: Iodine is an essential element for synthesizing thyroid hormones. Excessive or insufficient intake can lead to thyroid dysfunction. Abnormal iodine intake may trigger thyroid inflammation, which can progress to subacute thyroiditis. Adjust iodine intake to avoid both excess and deficiency.
2. Prolonged mental stress: Persistent mental tension can cause imbalances in the neuroendocrine system, affecting thyroid function. This stress may arise from work, study, or daily life, and long-term accumulation increases the risk of subacute thyroiditis. Adjust your mindset, relax, and avoid excessive anxiety. Stress can be relieved through exercise, meditation, or listening to music.
3. Viral infection: Viral infection is one of the common causes of subacute thyroiditis. These viruses include influenza virus, coxsackievirus, and mumps virus. After invading the thyroid, viruses can damage thyroid tissue and trigger local inflammation and immune responses. Symptoms may include fever in addition to those of thyroiditis. Antiviral medications such as entecavir tablets, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate tablets, and amantadine hydrochloride granules should be used according to medical advice.
4. Mumps: Mumps is an inflammation of the parotid gland caused by viral or bacterial infection. Because the parotid gland is adjacent to the thyroid, mumps can directly spread to the thyroid, causing subacute thyroiditis and possibly parotid gland swelling. Antiviral and anti-inflammatory medications such as ribavirin tablets, ibuprofen tablets, and acyclovir tablets should be used according to medical advice.
5. Autoimmune thyroiditis: Autoimmune thyroiditis is a thyroid inflammation caused by an autoimmune reaction. The patient's immune system mistakenly identifies and attacks thyroid tissue, leading to thyroid damage and inflammation, which may also be accompanied by goiter. Under a physician's guidance, medications such as thymopeptide enteric-coated capsules, levothyroxine sodium tablets, and acetaminophen tablets should be used to enhance immune function, maintain thyroid hormone balance, and provide anti-inflammatory treatment.
During treatment, individualized therapy should be implemented according to the patient's specific causes and symptoms to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes.
