Introduction
In general, impaired swallowing function after cerebral infarction can be improved through swallowing function training, adjustment of food consistency, postural adjustments, nutritional support treatment, and management of the primary disease and complications. A comprehensive treatment strategy is required to address impaired swallowing function following cerebral infarction. At the same time, the patient's swallowing function should be regularly assessed, and the treatment plan should be adjusted accordingly based on the evaluation results.

Generally, after cerebral infarction, impaired swallowing function can be improved through swallowing function training, adjustment of food consistency, postural adjustments, nutritional support treatment, and management of the primary disease and its complications. Detailed explanations are as follows:

1. Swallowing Function Training

Targeted exercises can enhance the strength and coordination of oral and pharyngeal muscles to improve swallowing function. Exercises may include movement training for swallowing organs, such as strengthening lip, jaw, tongue movements, and vocal cord closure control, as well as sensory stimulation training, such as applying cold stimulation to specific areas of the mouth and throat.

2. Adjustment of Food Consistency

The viscosity of food can be gradually adjusted according to the patient's swallowing ability, progressing from thin liquids to semisolid and then to normally textured foods. Easily swallowed and digestible foods, such as rice water, thin porridge, fruit juice, and vegetable puree, are recommended, as these can reduce swallowing difficulty and lower the risk of aspiration.

3. Postural Adjustments

Specific postures can help food pass smoothly past the vocal cords and prevent aspiration. During meals, keep the head slightly elevated, avoiding excessive tilting or looking downward. A semi-recumbent or seated position with the head slightly flexed forward can help food enter the esophagus more smoothly.

4. Nutritional Support Treatment

Adequate energy and nutrients should be provided to sustain essential life activities and promote recovery. Suitable nutritional supplementation methods should be selected according to the patient's needs, such as oral nutritional supplements or parenteral nutrition support. For patients with severe swallowing disorders who cannot eat normally, enteral nutrition via nasogastric or gastric tubes may be used.

5. Management of Primary Disease and Complications

Active treatment of the primary cerebral infarction is essential. Follow medical advice regarding the use of medications such as antiplatelet agents and lipid-lowering drugs to stabilize atherosclerotic plaques, improve cerebral blood circulation, and enhance neurological function to alleviate swallowing disorders. For patients with severe dysphagia, surgical interventions may be considered under medical guidance, such as cricopharyngeal myotomy, gastrostomy, or balloon dilation procedures.

Swallowing dysfunction after cerebral infarction requires a comprehensive treatment approach. Regular assessments of swallowing function should be conducted, and treatment plans adjusted accordingly. Additionally, patients and their families should learn how to prevent complications related to dysphagia and closely cooperate with medical recommendations and treatments.
