Can Codonopsis be steeped in water for consumption?
Codonopsis (Dang Shen) can generally be consumed as an infusion; however, it is important to follow medical advice to ensure appropriate preparation and consumption.
As a commonly used traditional Chinese herb, Codonopsis primarily functions to replenish vital energy, strengthen the spleen and stomach, nourish the lungs, and relieve coughing. When individuals experience symptoms such as physical weakness, poor gastrointestinal function, Qi deficiency, or fatigue, drinking an appropriate amount of Codonopsis infusion can be beneficial. Codonopsis is neutral in nature and sweet in taste, capable of invigorating Qi and nourishing the blood, thereby enhancing physical strength. In daily wellness practices, moderate consumption of Codonopsis tea can help improve immunity and is particularly suitable for individuals in a prolonged sub-healthy condition.
When preparing Codonopsis tea, select Codonopsis roots that are intact, free of insect damage, and without a moldy odor. Rinse the root thoroughly with clean water to remove surface impurities. To facilitate the release of its medicinal properties, the root can be sliced thinly or cut into small pieces. Place the Codonopsis into a cup, add an appropriate amount of boiling water, and steep for 10–15 minutes. Once the water has cooled to a comfortable temperature, it can be consumed. The Codonopsis can be re-steeped multiple times until the flavor diminishes.
During the period of Codonopsis consumption, it is recommended to maintain healthy dietary and lifestyle habits. Avoid consuming excessively cold or hot foods, maintain regular sleeping patterns, and minimize alcohol consumption.
