Introduction
1. Acute vaginitis: Characterized by varying degrees of pruritus, burning sensation, or pain in the vulva; fever may accompany the acute phase. 2. Ovulation bleeding: This may be related to a post-ovulatory decline in estrogen levels or result from minimal bleeding due to follicular rupture during ovulation. 3. Gynecological inflammation, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may also cause lower abdominal distension and pain. 4. Gynecological conditions, including cervical polyps and cervicitis.

Normal vaginal discharge is typically milky white or colorless and transparent, with a smooth, slippery consistency resembling egg whites—moderate in quantity and odorless. However, various factors may cause women to notice blood-tinged discharge or brownish secretions. So, what causes brownish discharge? Below are explanations for this phenomenon.

What Causes Brownish Discharge?

1. Acute Vaginitis

Vaginitis—the most common inflammatory condition affecting the female genital tract—can occur at any age. Clinical manifestations of acute vaginitis include increased vaginal discharge, urinary frequency, urgency, and dysuria, along with varying degrees of pruritus, burning, or pain in the vulva. Fever may accompany the acute phase.

2. Ovulation Bleeding

Around the time of ovulation—approximately two weeks before the next menstrual period—some women experience light spotting known as ovulation bleeding. This may be related to a transient drop in estrogen levels following ovulation or minor bleeding resulting from follicular rupture during ovulation. Although the exact mechanism remains unclear, ovulation bleeding is considered a physiological phenomenon. Thus, if brownish discharge appears during this timeframe, it likely reflects minimal bleeding associated with ovulation.

3. Gynecological Inflammation

Brownish discharge may result from gynecological inflammation—for example, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)—which can also cause lower abdominal distension and pain. Prompt medical evaluation is recommended to identify any underlying abnormalities. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits is advised to prevent disease onset. Additionally, patients should follow a bland, non-irritating diet and avoid spicy or stimulating foods.

4. Gynecological Disorders

Cervical conditions such as cervical polyps or cervicitis may lead to contact bleeding—i.e., brownish discharge appearing after intercourse. Moreover, certain reproductive tract tumors—including vaginal tumors, cervical cancer, and endometrial cancer—may also cause abnormal bleeding, typically presenting as contact bleeding or irregular vaginal bleeding.
