Efficacy and Effects of Angelica Sinensis
Danggui (Chinese Angelica root, *Angelica sinensis*) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb with numerous therapeutic properties—particularly beneficial for women. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Danggui has a sweet and rich taste, enabling it to nourish the blood; its mild, pungent aroma further enhances its ability to invigorate blood circulation and strengthen the middle burner (spleen and stomach). Danggui functions to nourish the blood, activate blood circulation, unblock meridians, and regulate menstruation.
It is frequently employed in managing common gynecological conditions in women, including menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, blood deficiency, amenorrhea, sallow complexion, fatigue, anemia, uterine bleeding, postpartum blood stasis, and profuse or prolonged uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia and menorrhagia).
Generally, Danggui has few contraindications; however, excessive or prolonged use should be avoided. Overdose may cause symptoms such as fatigue, dry mouth and throat, nausea, vomiting, and headache—though these typically resolve spontaneously upon discontinuation. During treatment, patients should maintain a light diet and avoid spicy, stimulating foods, which may interfere with the herb’s efficacy. It is generally recommended to take Danggui two to three times per week to alleviate symptoms effectively. Concurrently, consumption of spicy or irritating foods should be avoided throughout the course of treatment.
