Can Celebrex treat toothache?
Celebrex usually refers to celecoxib capsules, which can only relieve certain toothache symptoms but cannot address the underlying cause. For dental pain caused by conditions such as pulpitis or periapical periodontitis that require root canal treatment, medication alone has limited effectiveness. If discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek timely medical attention at a hospital, clarify the condition, and follow medical advice for proper treatment to avoid delaying the illness.
Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Under medical guidance, it may temporarily relieve pain caused by acute pericoronitis of wisdom teeth, swollen and painful gums due to gingivitis, or mild sensitivity to hot and cold stimuli from dental caries. This provides time for subsequent treatments, with effects typically beginning within 1–2 hours after administration. Dosage must strictly follow medical instructions.
However, this medication cannot eliminate the root cause of dental problems. In cases of severe spontaneous pain or nighttime pain caused by pulpitis, or chewing pain resulting from periapical periodontitis—where the dental pulp is already infected or necrotized—celecoxib can only temporarily suppress pain but cannot prevent the spread of infection. Effective resolution requires medical procedures such as root canal therapy to remove infected tissue.
In addition, celecoxib has specific contraindications: it should not be used by individuals allergic to its components, those with active peptic ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, or patients with severe heart failure. When experiencing tooth pain, one should first consult a doctor to determine the exact cause, then combine medication with targeted treatments accordingly.
