Do dentures need to be removed every day?
Dentures need to be removed daily depending on the type, and different types require different care methods based on oral health needs. Removable dentures must be taken out every day, while fixed dentures do not.
Removable dentures, such as complete dentures or partial removable dentures, must be removed daily. Taking them out at night relieves pressure on the gums and alveolar bone, allowing adequate rest and preventing tissue atrophy caused by prolonged pressure. After removal, clean the denture gaps with a dedicated cleaner and soft-bristled brush, and also remove any remaining food debris in the mouth to reduce bacterial growth and lower the risk of gingivitis, tooth decay, and other issues.
Fixed dentures, such as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns or all-ceramic crowns, do not need to be removed daily. These dentures are bonded permanently onto natural teeth or implants. Daily cleaning should mimic that of natural teeth: use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for thorough brushing, rinse after meals, and regularly use dental floss to clean between teeth to prevent food impaction and subsequent periodontal problems.
Regardless of the type of denture, regular check-ups at the dental clinic are essential to ensure proper fit and maintain oral health. Seek prompt medical attention if you experience discomfort such as looseness or pain, so adjustments can be made as needed.
