Introduction
Pain caused by gallbladder polyps is mostly located in the right upper abdomen, specifically in the area between the lower edge of the right rib cage and the upper abdomen. In some patients, the pain may radiate to the right shoulder, back, or beneath the scapula. A minority may also experience upper abdominal bloating, discomfort, or aching. If persistent pain in the right upper abdomen occurs, especially if it worsens or is accompanied by fever, prompt medical evaluation at a hepatobiliary surgery clinic is recommended.

In some patients, the pain may radiate to the right shoulder, back, or beneath the scapula. A few individuals may also experience upper abdominal bloating, discomfort, or a dull ache. If persistent pain in the right upper abdomen occurs, especially if it worsens or is accompanied by fever, prompt medical evaluation at a hepatobiliary surgery clinic is recommended.

When gallbladder polyps are relatively large, irritate the gallbladder wall, or are accompanied by cholecystitis, the pain is typically localized in the right upper quadrant and may present as a dull ache, distension, or intermittent colicky pain. Pain episodes are often associated with consuming greasy foods; after eating, gallbladder contraction increases irritation, thereby intensifying the pain, which may temporarily subside with rest.

If the pain is severe, it may radiate to other areas. The most common site of radiation is the right shoulder and back, though in rare cases it may extend to the right flank. This occurs because the nerve supply of the gallbladder shares pathways with nerves in the shoulder and back regions, causing pain signals to be transmitted to these areas and sometimes leading to misinterpretation as a musculoskeletal issue in the shoulder or back.

In daily life, it is important to avoid fried foods, fatty meats, and other greasy foods to reduce triggers for pain. Eating slowly and avoiding overeating can help manage symptoms. During pain episodes, adequate rest and gentle massage of the right upper abdomen may provide some relief.
