Introduction
1. Trichomoniasis vaginitis is commonly caused by *Trichomonas vaginalis* and is primarily transmitted through sexual intercourse or, less commonly, via indirect contact. Patients typically present with frothy vaginal discharge, which may appear white or pale yellow. 2. Candidal (or fungal) vaginitis is characterized primarily by yellowish vaginal discharge, accompanied by increased discharge volume and a curd-like (cheese-like) consistency; the discharge is typically white or pale yellow.

Abnormal vaginal discharge manifests in numerous ways—such as changes in its consistency, thickness, or odor—all of which fall under the category of abnormal vaginal discharge. Such abnormalities are commonly associated with inflammation, most frequently resulting from gynecological conditions like vaginitis or cervicitis. So, what causes excessive vaginal discharge with a fishy odor? Below, we address this question.

What Causes Excessive Vaginal Discharge with a Fishy Odor?

1. Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas Vaginitis)

This condition is primarily caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. Transmission occurs mainly through sexual intercourse or indirectly via contaminated objects. Patients typically present with frothy vaginal discharge that is white or pale yellow in color, accompanied by intense pruritus (itching). Additional symptoms may include urinary frequency, dysuria (painful urination), abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If diagnosed with trichomoniasis, both partners must undergo treatment simultaneously to prevent cross-infection.

2. Candidiasis (Yeast Infection / Vulvovaginal Candidiasis)

The hallmark symptom is yellowish vaginal discharge, often markedly increased in volume and resembling cottage cheese—typically white or pale yellow in color—along with severe vaginal itching. The vaginal mucosa may appear erythematous (red), edematous (swollen), or even ulcerated. This condition is usually caused by infection with Candida albicans. Chronic cervicitis may also contribute to similar symptoms. Occasionally, the discharge may contain trace blood streaks and be profuse. Beyond abnormal discharge, patients may experience lower abdominal pain, dysuria (painful or difficult urination), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and menstrual irregularities.

Knowledge Expansion: How to Manage Vaginal Discharge with an Unpleasant Odor

1. Avoid wearing tight-fitting pants or jeans regularly; instead, choose cotton underwear for optimal breathability. Engage in activities that promote emotional well-being and practice psychological self-regulation to maintain a healthy mental state—avoid excessive excitement or irritability. Additionally, schedule routine gynecological examinations—even in the absence of symptoms—as preventive care.

2. Maintain regular physical exercise to strengthen overall health, ensure adequate sleep, follow a balanced and nutritious diet, and consume foods rich in vitamins. Avoid daily use of sanitary pads, as they impede ventilation and may compromise hygiene if used long-term. Moreover, using inadequately sterilized pads can exacerbate rather than alleviate the problem.

Above is an overview of the common causes of excessive vaginal discharge with a fishy odor. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
