What Are the Symptoms of Tenosynovitis?
Tenosynovitis manifests with localized pain, joint swelling, crepitus (a snapping or popping sensation) during movement, restricted flexion and extension, and localized tenderness. It commonly results from repeated friction between the tendon and its surrounding sheath, leading to aseptic inflammation that progressively impairs normal limb function. As functional impairment worsens, timely medical evaluation and intervention are strongly recommended.
1. Localized Pain: Distinct pain occurs during tendon movement at the affected site. Pain intensifies after repetitive activity and slightly subsides with rest. Sharp, localized pain is elicited specifically during forceful gripping or active flexion/extension of the involved joint.
2. Joint Swelling: Inflammatory stimulation causes hyperemia and edema of the tendon sheath tissue, resulting in mild visible swelling at the lesion site. Palpation reveals thickened soft tissue; severe swelling may compress adjacent structures, exacerbating discomfort.

3. Crepitus During Movement: As the tendon slides through a narrowed tendon sheath, intermittent “catching” or audible snapping occurs—particularly noticeable during finger or wrist flexion/extension. Each “catch” is accompanied by sharp, transient pain; in advanced cases, frequent snapping and catching may occur during routine motion.
4. Restricted Flexion and Extension: Inflammation induces adhesions and narrowing of the tendon sheath, limiting full range of joint motion. Forceful movements become difficult to execute, and attempting them may strain the inflamed area, impairing basic daily activities such as grasping objects or raising the arm.
5. Localized Tenderness: Light pressure over the inflamed tendon sheath elicits marked, sharp pain. Palpation of the tender point may cause mild radiation of discomfort to surrounding areas. Prolonged pressure often leads to persistent soreness and aching that dissipates slowly.
In daily life, minimize repetitive hand use; gently mobilize and relax joints during rest periods; keep the affected area warm and avoid cold exposure; and apply appropriate force during physical tasks. Long-term, consistent care helps reduce mechanical wear on the tendon sheath.
