Introduction
Soaking feet in vinegar essence cannot cure onychomycosis (gray nail) permanently; it only exerts a mild antimicrobial effect and is unlikely to penetrate the nail plate to eradicate deep-seated fungi. Moreover, it may easily cause skin burns on the feet. If you notice nail thickening, discoloration, or nail plate fragmentation, seek prompt medical attention for standardized treatment. Onychomycosis is caused by dermatophytes invading beneath the nail plate; the nail plate itself is dense and thick.

Vinegar essence foot soaks cannot cure onychomycosis (gray nail) permanently; they only provide mild antifungal effects and are unlikely to penetrate the nail plate to eradicate deep-seated fungi. Moreover, prolonged use may cause chemical burns to the skin of the feet. Onychomycosis is caused by dermatophytes invading the area beneath the nail plate. The nail plate itself is dense and highly keratinized, making it extremely difficult for the acidic components in vinegar essence to penetrate into the nail bed. Even if surface fungi are partially suppressed, pathogens residing deep within the nail plate remain viable and continue damaging the nail structure. Due to its relatively high acidity, prolonged soaking in vinegar essence can irritate and erode the skin of the feet—leading to peeling, erythema, stinging pain, and even skin breakdown with secondary infection.

Clinically, onychomycosis treatment falls into two categories: topical and systemic (oral) antifungal therapy. For mild cases, topical antifungal agents may be used, applied consistently until a completely new, healthy nail has fully regrown. In cases involving extensive nail destruction or multiple affected nails, oral antifungal medications are often added to enhance efficacy. Treatment duration tends to be lengthy, requiring strict adherence to the full course to prevent relapse.

In daily life, maintain dry, well-ventilated feet; change socks and footwear regularly; avoid sharing slippers or nail clippers with others; and minimize exposure to warm, humid environments—thereby reducing the risk of recurrent fungal infection.
