Introduction

Applying facial masks does not directly remove acne marks; they only provide auxiliary soothing and moisturizing effects. Acne marks fall into two categories: erythematous (red) marks and pigmentary (hyperpigmented) marks. Masks cannot repair damaged dermal tissue nor rapidly metabolize deposited pigment. If acne marks persist without fading—or even worsen over time—prompt medical consultation is essential.

Erythematous acne marks result from capillary dilation following inflammation resolution, whereas pigmentary marks arise from melanin accumulation left behind by inflammatory processes. Ordinary hydrating masks can improve skin hydration levels and reinforce the superficial epidermal barrier, thereby alleviating redness and discomfort. Brightening masks containing active whitening ingredients act solely on the skin’s surface and cannot effectively penetrate deeper layers to fade pigment; thus, they should not be relied upon as primary treatment.

In clinical practice, treatment strategies for fading acne marks are tailored according to their type: erythematous marks may be addressed with light- or energy-based therapies to constrict dilated blood vessels, while pigmentary marks are typically managed with topical brightening agents that accelerate pigment metabolism. During active acne, avoiding squeezing or scratching lesions helps minimize inflammation and reduces the likelihood of new acne mark formation at its source. Consistent, evidence-based interventions allow the skin to gradually restore its smooth texture through natural turnover.

Daily sun protection is critical to prevent UV radiation from exacerbating pigment deposition. Simplifying one’s skincare routine—avoiding heavy, pore-clogging products—helps maintain skin stability and supports the natural, gradual fading of acne marks through physiological skin renewal.
