Introduction
1. Cutaneous symptoms: Pallor may appear on the skin, mucous membranes, and conjunctivae. 2. Systemic symptoms: Fatigue and lethargy may occur due to anemia-induced tissue hypoxia. 3. Gastrointestinal symptoms: Pregnant women may experience decreased appetite, abdominal distension, nausea, and edema. 4. Other symptoms: Palpitations, tachycardia, or cardiac murmurs may also be present.

Anemia in pregnancy falls under the category of high-risk pregnancy in obstetrics. Pregnant women experiencing anemia during gestation should take it seriously and consider dietary adjustments—specifically, increasing intake of iron-rich foods to replenish the body’s required iron stores. So, what are the symptoms of anemia during pregnancy? The following section addresses this question.

Symptoms of Anemia During Pregnancy

1. Cutaneous Symptoms

During pregnancy, anemia significantly affects the skin and mucous membranes—including the conjunctiva—causing pallor in these areas. Pallor may also appear on the thenar and hypothenar eminences of the palms and the nail beds.

2. Systemic Symptoms

Anemia-induced tissue hypoxia during pregnancy commonly manifests as fatigue and generalized weakness—often among the earliest symptoms. As anemia progresses, additional central nervous system manifestations may develop, including dizziness, vertigo, impaired concentration, and excessive daytime sleepiness. In severe cases, syncope or altered mental status may occur.

3. Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Anemia during pregnancy can impair gastrointestinal function, leading to decreased appetite, abdominal distension, nausea, and edema. Some affected individuals may also experience tinnitus or develop proteinuria.

4. Other Symptoms

Severe anemia may produce cardiovascular manifestations, such as palpitations, tachycardia, or cardiac murmurs. In extreme cases, angina pectoris or even heart failure may ensue. Due to chronic hypoxia or hypercapnia resulting from anemia, patients may develop dyspnea, shortness of breath, and respiratory distress.

The above outlines the common symptoms associated with anemia during pregnancy. We hope this information is helpful to you.
