Introduction
The following measures may help reduce swelling: 1. Rest and avoid excessive activity; if swelling is pronounced, external immobilization with a cast or brace may be required. 2. Oral or topical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. 3. Massage therapy may begin three days after injury, performed once or twice weekly. 4. After two weeks, TCM foot soaks may be used once daily. Note: This approach does not apply to fractures resulting from ankle sprains.
