Gynecological Use of Povidone-Iodine Solution

After cleansing the external genitalia, apply the solution to the perivaginal area. First, wear sterile or disposable gloves, then dip a cotton swab into the solution and gently apply it to the external genitalia and the accessible portion of the vaginal opening. Alternatively, a diluted solution may be used for sitz baths to soak the external genital area. However, overuse must be avoided; povidone-iodine solution is not recommended for women who are attempting to conceive or are pregnant. As a broad-spectrum antiseptic wash, povidone-iodine rapidly and thoroughly eliminates numerous pathogenic microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, and viruses—on skin and mucosal surfaces. In addition to surgical applications, clinical studies indicate that this solution demonstrates specific therapeutic efficacy against cervical inflammation, cervical erosion, vaginitis, and other gynecological infections of unknown etiology.

Additional Information: Precautions for Using Povidone-Iodine Solution

1. Povidone-iodine solution is for external use only and must never be ingested. In case of accidental ingestion leading to poisoning, immediately perform gastric lavage with a starch paste or rice water and seek emergency medical care.

2. Mild, transient local irritation at the application site (e.g., on wounds or mucosa) may occur but typically resolves spontaneously within minutes and requires no special intervention. However, if symptoms such as burning sensation, erythema, or swelling develop, discontinue use immediately, thoroughly rinse off the medication from the affected area, and consult a physician.

The above outlines the gynecological applications of povidone-iodine solution. We hope this information is helpful to you.
