Introduction
Phimosis, if severe enough to cause disharmony during sexual intercourse, typically requires surgical treatment. Postoperatively, a period of rest is necessary. In most cases, sutures can be removed after 7–10 days, and basic recovery is usually achieved by day 14. However, the recovery timeline varies among individuals and depends on personal healing progress. Sexual activity with a partner should generally be avoided for approximately one month.

Circumcision—also known as phimosis surgery—is a surgical procedure performed to treat phimosis (excessively long or tight foreskin). This surgery significantly reduces the incidence of genital diseases in adult men. For infants or children with phimosis or paraphimosis, circumcision is generally considered ideal between ages 7 and 8. However, adult men with phimosis should seek medical evaluation and undergo circumcision as early as possible. So, how long does it take to recover after circumcision? Below, we address this question.

How Long Does It Take to Recover After Circumcision?

When an overly long foreskin causes sexual dysfunction or discomfort, postoperative rest and recovery are essential. In most cases, sutures can be removed within 7–10 days, and basic recovery is typically achieved by day 14. However, recovery time varies among individuals and depends on personal healing capacity; sexual intercourse should be avoided for approximately one month. Usually, patients undergoing circumcision do not require hospitalization and may return home for convalescence. Nevertheless, they must follow their physician’s instructions regarding scheduled outpatient visits for wound dressing changes and clinical assessment of wound healing progress. Notably, postoperative penile erections—especially frequent ones—may cause local wound dehiscence and minor bleeding, thereby prolonging the recovery period.

Additional Information: Post-Circumcision Care Guidelines

1. Dietary Restrictions

Dietary considerations are important following circumcision. Patients should avoid smoking and alcohol consumption and limit intake of spicy or highly stimulating foods. Instead, they are encouraged to consume ample fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins that support antibacterial activity, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain.

2. Activity Restrictions

Men who have recently undergone circumcision should refrain from strenuous physical labor, especially activities that risk trauma to the genital area. The glans penis should be protected from direct friction against underwear. Furthermore, sexual intercourse must be strictly avoided until the surgical wound has fully healed. Engaging in intercourse prematurely may not only cause wound dehiscence but also increase susceptibility to bacterial infection, potentially triggering various genitourinary disorders.

The above outlines typical recovery timelines and essential care recommendations following circumcision. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
