Early Symptoms of Liver Tumors
The high mortality rate of liver cancer is not due to a lack of available clinical treatments, but rather to the extreme difficulty in detecting it at an early stage. Among all patients newly diagnosed with liver cancer, only 30% remain eligible for surgical intervention. Patients diagnosed at advanced stages can only receive palliative care aimed at alleviating suffering and prolonging survival. So, what are the early symptoms of liver tumors? Below, we address this question.

Early Symptoms of Liver Tumors
1. Pain in the Hepatic Region
The liver surface is covered by the hepatic capsule. Enlargement of the liver or growth of cancerous cells may stretch and pull on this capsule, leading to pain during disease progression—typically described as mild, dull, or stabbing discomfort. This pain may intensify or subside depending on body position, physical exertion, or circadian rhythm; notably, it often worsens when lying on the left side.
2. Palpable Upper-Abdominal Mass
Adults aged 30 years or older who detect a firm, irregularly surfaced mass in the right upper quadrant or epigastrium—especially one that progressively enlarges upon repeated observation—should suspect liver cancer, even if they experience no obvious discomfort.

3. Gastrointestinal Disturbances
Early gastrointestinal manifestations of liver cancer commonly include loss of appetite, postprandial epigastric fullness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Diarrhea, in particular, is frequently misdiagnosed as infectious enteritis and thus overlooked. Unexplained weight loss is also common among liver cancer patients, resulting from impaired liver function and consequent reduction in digestive and absorptive capacity.
4. Deteriorated Facial Appearance
When liver function declines, estrogen secreted by organs such as the adrenal glands and ovaries cannot be adequately metabolized and inactivated within the liver. This leads to increased activity of tyrosinase, which converts tyrosine into melanin. Accumulated estrogen further promotes melanin deposition in facial skin—which is relatively thin—resulting in clinical features collectively termed “hepatic facies,” including sallow complexion, periorbital darkening (dark circles), and telangiectasia (dilated capillaries) at the nasal tip.
The above outlines the early symptoms of liver tumors. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
