What Is Typhoid Cold?
“Shanghan” (Cold-Damage) cold is a type of common cold triggered by exposure to wind and cold, with higher incidence during autumn and winter. Common symptoms include mild fever, absence of sweating, preference for warm beverages, and—when more severe—generalized body aches, headache, clear nasal discharge, cough, thin white phlegm, and urticarial skin rash. The rash may be accompanied by swelling of the postauricular lymph nodes.

What Is “Shanghan” Cold?
Both Western and traditional Chinese medicines are effective in treating this condition. Typically, improvement occurs within 3–5 days; in cases with a longer course, recovery generally takes about one week.
Treatment of “shanghan” cold can follow TCM syndrome differentiation principles. For instance, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), which functions to disperse cold from the lung and release the exterior with acrid-warm herbs, may be used. Alternatively, a home remedy involves boiling two scallion whites and 10 g of fermented soybeans in water for three minutes; after ingestion, cover up warmly to induce sweating. This should be taken once daily, usually yielding improvement within three doses. Additional supportive measures include taking a warm bath and drinking ginger-sugar water. Patients may also take Banlangen Granules, Amoxicillin Capsules, or Ganmao Qingre Granules, all of which demonstrate good therapeutic efficacy. During treatment, patients should minimize outdoor activities to avoid exacerbation due to cold-air exposure. Living environments should be well-ventilated and adequately warm, and patients should drink ample plain boiled water.
Diet should consist of warm, easily digestible foods—such as corn porridge, millet porridge, silver ear and lotus seed porridge, goji berry porridge, and Chinese yam porridge—and fruits rich in vitamins (served warm, not raw or chilled). Avoid cold, greasy, or spicy foods, as these impede recovery. Adequate rest and sufficient sleep are essential; staying up late should be avoided.
