Introduction
1. Conservative treatment: If the shoulder fracture is mild and there is no complete displacement, immobilization with a cast or splint may be used. 2. Surgical treatment: If the shoulder fracture is severe—such as a comminuted fracture or complete displacement—internal fixation surgery is required.

Shoulder fractures refer to partial or complete breaks in the bony structures of the shoulder, resulting from trauma or pathological conditions. Common clinical types include fractures of the greater tuberosity of the humerus, surgical neck fractures of the humerus, scapular fractures, and acromial end fractures of the clavicle. Below, we address the question: “How are shoulder fractures treated?”

How Are Shoulder Fractures Treated?

1. Conservative Management

A fracture is defined as a partial or complete break in bone structure. With prompt and appropriate treatment, most patients regain full functional recovery; however, in more severe cases, some individuals may experience varying degrees of long-term complications. Fractures can result from multiple causes—such as direct trauma, falls (particularly common in older adults), or chronic, repetitive local direct or indirect injury leading to stress fractures of the shoulder. When a shoulder fracture is mild and does not involve complete displacement, treatment typically involves immobilization using a cast or splint.

2. Surgical Intervention

In cases of severe shoulder fracture—such as comminuted fractures or complete displacement—internal fixation surgery is generally required. Prior to surgery, comprehensive preoperative evaluation is essential. During the procedure, the skin is incised, and an appropriate internal fixation device (e.g., plates, screws, or intramedullary nails) is selected and applied to stabilize the fractured bone segments.

The above outlines the primary approaches to treating shoulder fractures. We hope this information is helpful to you.
